Who we are

Back in 2013, the Neighbourhood Project was set up by a group of people who felt where we live – our neighbourhoods - should be more than just houses where people eat, watch TV and sleep.  They strongly wanted us to live in thriving communities were people took an interest in what happened locally and got involved, whether by going along to a public meeting, volunteering, or setting up a new community project. They could also see that places which have declined would not successfully turn themselves around – regenerate themselves - without the involvement of their residents as it is they who know their neighbourhoods better than anybody else and what is likely to succeed locally.  Above all, they wanted people to feel positive about where they lived - a sense of belonging and pride in their neighbourhoods.

The Neighbourhood Project was thus set up to achieve this goal of helping residents turn their home areas into active communities. We very quickly realised that one major barrier to people getting involved was a lack of knowledge about how things work and how they can make positive changes happen. We therefore decided to pursue an agenda of raising people’s awareness about these things – educating them, improving their confidence in their abilities, and mentoring them to become active.

We were set up in Bradford, West Yorkshire, so most of our work has focused on this city and especially its more deprived neighbourhoods. In more recent times, we have begun to extend our reach across a much larger area and worked in Craven and Leeds.

We were originally established as an unincorporated association but since 2018 have become a community interest company. This is to give more confidence to potential funders as we have a statutory asset lock so our resources must be used only for our social purpose
